A FIELD GUIDE FOR THE SUSPICIOUS

Welcome to Cherlock.

Everyone has a role. Some people have an alibi. Your task is to work out who deserves your trust.

01 · THE ASSIGNMENT

Know your purpose.

Your role and faction are private. Read your role card for your abilities and the condition you must meet to win. The Old Town follows the original game's rules. A New Darkness follows the 2026 sequel text rules, where role and faction are separate: a familiar ability can belong to an unexpected ally.

02 · AFTER DARK

Make your move.

Use the action panel to choose an ability and its targets. You can change your choice until night ends. Living players cannot use town chat at night; authorized factions and jailed players get their own private channels.

03 · IN THE DAYLIGHT

Follow the evidence.

Discuss in town chat, share your discoveries, and inspect the graveyard. Whispers are private messages where permitted. Keep a last will: it can be revealed after your death.

04 · ON TRIAL

Choose carefully.

During voting, nominate a living suspect. A majority puts that player on trial. Listen to their defense, then vote guilty, innocent, or abstain. A guilty majority sends them to the gallows.

05 · BEYOND THE GRAVE

Your story continues.

Dead players can read public town chat, but their replies stay in dead chat. Living players cannot read dead chat unless a special ability, such as the Medium ability, permits it. Dead players cannot vote. Private channels only appear when your role and phase allow them.

06 · GATHER YOUR FRIENDS

Make it your village.

Public matchmaking joins a real lobby. Private rooms use an invitation link or room code. Hosts may explicitly fill empty seats with labelled bots. Games start with 7–15 players; practice starts with you and bots.

A little advice: Record who you visited and what you learned each night. A convincing story is useful. A consistent story is better.

THE DETECTIVE’S NOTEBOOK

Leave a paper trail.

Your last will can be found after your death. Record visits, clues, and the things the town must know.
